The Unit has been inexistence for over 35 years, delivering courses and trade union education for union representatives and members in North Staffordshire on the TUC ‘unionlearn’ programme. Courses are largely based around the TUC’s 10 day core programme and are delivered in an informal and mutually supportive style, in the Unit’s dedicated facilities, with the focus and starting point for study founded in students’ own experience and understanding of ‘the world of work’. All courses are open to and free of charge for union representatives, health and safety reps, union learning reps and members of all TUC affiliated trade unions. The Union Representatives’ Stage 1 Certificate is an introduction to the fundamentals of trade union organisation, designed to give new union reps the skills and confidence to develop their trade union role. Stepping Up develops these skills and explores areas of employment law and human resource management necessary for the representative to build their negotiating skills and beyond this The Global Economy and Changes at work Certificate is a level 3 course specifically developed here at the stoke Unit to encourage reps to think about and discuss wider issues of industrial relations in the new global economy. For health and safety reps the Health and Safety Stage 1 Certificate helps new reps identify the main hazards and risks in workplaces and to tackle them by building strong trade union organisation at a local level, while the Next Steps Health and Safety Certificate goes on to consider recent developments in health and safety standards with a review of risk management techniques. Training and education are vital for job security and the regeneration of our local economy and are vital areas of trade union activity. TUC educated Trade Union Learning Reps put these issues on the bargaining agenda informed by 5 day ULR courses. The Stage 1 Award helps build learning structures, working with employers on learning and skills, while the advanced skills covered in Stage 2 include equal opportunities planning and negotiating skills. A full 10 day Union Learning Reps Certificate is also part of the programme. For experienced reps who want to move on the Trade Union Studies Unit runs level 3 Diploma Courses comprising 12 month programmes of study over 3, 12 week terms. The Diploma in Employment Law considers in detail the growth of UK labour law, the practicalities of individual law including contracts of employment and unfair dismissal, while a third module on trade union and collective rights considers recognition, democracy and industrial action. Access to HE study in Industrial Relations at Keele University is an option on completion. The Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety covers Health, Safety, Welfare and the Environment, Organisation and Law and seeks to develop a range of higher level study skills. Completion allows for membership of IOSH and progress to year 2 of the NEBOSH Diploma. Staff at the Unit are also happy to work with local trade unions to develop a range of short courses to meet specific needs, including Pensions, bargaining, communication skills and equalities issues.
