With an Apprenticeship, you can earn money while you’re learning and gain recognised qualifications as you work.
As employees, Apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis, Apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship, the Apprentices’ ability and the industry sector.

Constant growth within the UK’s Information Technology (IT) industry means there is an ever-increasing demand for employees possessing specialised technical skills. Almost all UK businesses, covering a wide range of industries, will be reliant on IT in some form.
As IT has become such an important element in so many aspects of working life, the variety of career opportunities is vast. These range from specialist jobs involving high degrees of
manual labour, such as installing networking cables, through to jobs that will have you sat at a desk for the majority of your day, such as application programming.

The course is a mixture of traditional business administrative content and technical knowledge required to work in a medical environment. This provides students with the understanding, knowledge and skills that will meet the special administration support needs of a range of healthcare providers.
The Business Administration Apprenticeship covers a broad range of administrative procedures including customer relations, communication skills, dealing with visitors and supporting teams. The course combines NVQ and Technical Certificate qualifications with Functional skills.
The IT User Apprenticeship provides work-based training development and new learning opportunities, to develope your IT knowledge and skills within the workplace. Having the ability to use IT effectively allows you to work in a variety of industries and job roles.

The IT User Advanced Apprenticeship covers the use of IT systems and software. The course consists of a Diploma qualification along with Functional Skills/Functional Skills.
Entry Level vocational courses for students ages 16 - 19. This course is for students who may need to work on their English, maths and personal and social skills before progressing onto a Level 1 vocational course.
This course provides you with high quality, industry recognised qualifications that help you to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to work as a professional in the IT sector. The programme begins with an introduction to using IT tools to communicate and exchange information safely, securely and effectively, in addition looking at the available professional IT job roles. You will then have the opportunity to develop specialist computer systems knowledge, understanding and skills in hardware or software.
In addition, it gives you the opportunity to develop a range of functional skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life such as communication and IT skills.
This course will help you to develop your IT skills and knowledge, enabling you to use IT effectively in your daily life. The course includes IT and communication software, digital lifestyle, using mobile IT devices, multimedia and design software, document design, digital imaging and computer systems. You will also develop a range of functional skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life, including time management, teamwork, communication, number and research skills. On successful completion you could progress to enter employment in the IT sector or to progress on to the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in IT.
The course offers an interesting and challenging series of units designed to provide you with a broad knowledge of IT and help you develop relevant skills to enable you to progress in to work in the modern IT industry in Stoke on Trent and surrounding area.
Students will initially complete six units during the first year which combine practical activity and academic study that lead to a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in IT (equivalent to 1 AS Level), they then have the option to progress on to one of the following technical specialist pathways (equivalent to 3 A-Levels) beginning in the first year and ending at summer in the second year.
ï BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT (Networking and Systems Support)
ï BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT (Software Development including Programming)
Alternatively students may choose to progress into employment or apprenticeship.
In addition students will be required a complete a work experience programme to gain valuable experience in the workplace and appropriate enrichment activities to support this placement.
This qualification provides knowledge which is essential for anyone who is to use a computer in a business environment.
ECDL has been a benchmark qualification in business and industry for well over ten years. ECDL Essentials is the level one qualification, to be awarded when a learner has successfully completed the assignments for three designated level one units; IT User Fundamentals; Using email and the Internet and Security for IT Users. Learners will complete two units independently and register for the full Award when completing the third and final unit. The ten week units may be completed in any order. Learners will need to register separately for the examination.
MOS units not only teach the principles of the subject, but also provides an in-depth knowledge of the software package used, and its facilities. It will change the way that you work whether you are a business user, home user or student. You will discover new and inspiring ways to use your computer. Whether you are formalising your knowledge via certification, seeking employment or seeking promotion, the ability to put MOS on your CV is invaluable and satisfying.
The programme covers a range of Computing topics including: Database Development, Hardware, Multimedia, Professional Skills, Programming and Systems Analysis. It will help you to develop practical skills and gain confidence as well as enhancing your analytical, team working and communication skills
An introduction to networking using the Cisco CCNA Networking Academy curriculum. This modules covers parts 1 & 2 of the CCNA curriculum.
Content includes fundamental networking principles, IP addressing, routing protocols, network device configuration, OSI and TCP/IP layers, and cabling.
The main focus of the module is to cover the basic network concepts and to be able to configure small networks with appropriate IP addresses with routing protocols.
An introduction to programming using the Java language.
Contents include: variables, keyboard input, string methods, selection/decision statements, loops, arrays, algorithmics ñ sorting and searching, exceptions handling and files.
The main focus of the module is to teach fundamental programming techniques which are applicable regardless of language. As a result of this the object orientated features of Java are not considered here but are reserved for its follow-on module.
This module provides an introduction to the theory and application of digital multimedia development.
Contents include: principles of interaction design, the design process, functional specifications, media elements such as graphics, sound, and video, and scripting languages, deployment, and testing.
The main focus of the module is to teach fundamental multimedia development theory and techniques, which are applicable regardless of language or technology, that can be used to develop standalone computer applications which can be used in a variety of environments, such as advertising and education.
The Foundation Year is designed to prepare you with the knowledge and skills to move onto a three year Computing Honours degree at Staffordshire University. During your time on this course you will study a range of topics including: Computer Hardware, Database Development, Software Development, Introductory Maths, Professional and Academic Skills and Web Technologies.

Andrew Dawson
Andrew is currently volunteering at the college with the aim of becoming a specialist in Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. Andrew is deaf, and the college provides him with support in the form of lipspeakers and signers in order to help him get the qualifications that employers look for.
