Higher Education Unit - Introduction to Multimedia Development

What is this course about?

This module provides an introduction to the theory and application of digital multimedia development.
Contents include: Principles of Interaction Design, the Design Process, Functional Specifications, Media Elements such as Graphics, Sound, and Video, and Scripting Languages, Deployment and Testing.
The main focus of the module is to teach fundamental multimedia development theory and techniques, which are applicable regardless of language or technology and that can be used to develop standalone computer applications which can be used in a variety of environments, such as advertising and education.


Entry Requirements

This module (whilst offered separately here) is part of the Foundation degree in Computing and HNC in Applied IT - and as such is at Level 4 (university undergraduate level). Youíll will be expected to have good English and Maths. Ideally you will also have an appropriate certificate at Level 3 (A Level equivalent). Dependent upon the your existing ability and qualifications an interview for admission onto this course may be required.

How is it taught?

Each 2 hour lesson consists of a lecture, tutorial and practical. You are encouraged to ask questions and to work in small groups on some of your tutorials as this helps provide a range of learning opportunities. Tutor support is also provided outside of the teaching time via an online learning environment.
Youíll will also be expected to spend between 3 to 6 hours of your own time completing the coursework each week.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment consists of the development of a standalone multimedia product to a given specification, including documentation of its target audience, design and testing.

Stoke on Trent College has some of the most comprehensive and up-to-date facilities in the country. Learning takes place in a friendly and relaxed environment and your teaching team are here to help you get the most from your course. If you want to study on your own you can use one of the Learning Resources Centres or one of the special study workshops in English, Mathematics and Information Technology. All our classrooms are large, spacious and well equipped, and our staff have an excellent knowledge of the industry gained through many years of experience.

You may choose to complete the followup module: Introduction to Rich Internet Applications which builds on this unit and covers more advanced topics such as Streaming Media and Web Applications.
If youíve completed this module you may choose other modules from the variety of those on offer as part of the Foundation degree in Computing and HNC in Applied IT.
