Prep 4 Developing Employability Skills

What is this course about?

Prep 4 Developing Employability Skills is a course that can start you on the path to a vocational programme within college, an apprenticeship or in progressing to a job. You will be able to study a range of units including preparation for work, personal career planning, work based placement, enterprise, time management skills, team work, managing your money, oral presentation skills and making choices. Functional Skills maths and English are also integral to the course. Enterprise is also a big feature in the course and you will be encouraged to demonstrate the skills you have learnt through fund raising activities. Furthermore, as part of the course you will be encouraged to participate in work experience placements for a vocation in any area of the college. You will have the opportunity to try out different areas and a session a week that area gaining relevant experience and building your confidence in order to help you to make the right choices about your chosen vocation and to prepare you for a full time vocational course.

No formal requirements, but you will have a pre-induction interview/
assessment to make sure this is the right level for you.

How is it taught?

The course is taught by an experienced and well-qualified lecturer and all classes are supported by a learning support assistant to ensure that 1-2-1 or small group support is available if necessary.
The learning will take place in our Burslem campus in classrooms, computer suites and you will have full access to all of the latest equipment and technology available in all areas of the college that relates to your chosen vocation. Learning is practical and hands on and accessible to everyone.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is on-going throughout the course. For each unit that you work on, you will have to complete an assessment to evidence your learning and understanding. Your tutor will tell you when the assessments will take place. You must successfully pass all of the unit assessments in order to pass the course successfully.

What else do I need to know?

All of the Prep 4 courses are smaller sized classes to allow more individual support that nurtures and develops learners and their learning. As the course progresses throughout the year, more independence and autonomy is encouraged.

What could I do next?

Support is provided to identify progression pathways that are appropriate to the individual. Progression can be within the Preparation 4 Vocation area to a level 2 employability course, an apprenticeship or it can be within area or any of the other vocational areas that are on offer in college.
