Higher Education Unit - Data modelling and information retrieval with MySQL

What is this course about?

The module covers aspects such as entity modelling for relational databases, mapping the entity relationship design models to database implementations (using MySQL), defining data structures, especially database schemas (using DDL), using DML (for for inserting, deleting and updating data in databases).

This module also considers information retrieval, types of information, levels of information and the management and use of information. It also looks into the legislation associated with the management and use of information.


Entry Requirements

This module (whilst offered separately here) is part of the Foundation degree in Computing and Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Applied IT - and as such is at Level 5 (university undergraduate level). Students will be expected to have good English and Maths. Ideally a student will also have an appropriate certificate at Level 3 (A Level equivalent). Dependent upon your existing ability and qualifications an interview for admission onto this course may be required.

How is it taught?

Each 2 hour lesson consists of a lecture, tutorial and practical. You are encouraged to ask questions and to work in small groups on some of your tutorials as this helps provide a range of learning opportunities. Tutor support is also provided outside of the teaching time via an online learning environment. Youíll also be expected to spend between 4 to 8 hours of your own time completing the coursework each week.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment consists of a coursework portfolio (a phased series of practical tasks).

Due to the level of this course all students will need to speak to a member of the HE Computing team before being accepted on to the course.
