What is this course about?

This course will provide you with opportunities to develop and demonstrate a wide range of skills, knowledge and understanding that will assist career development in the engineering sector. It will also help you to develop transferable skills in
the areas of Literacy, Numeracy and Information Technology. Itís designed for people who wish to develop their employability skills in the fields of manufacturing and engineering. Modules can include Personal Development, Mathematics, Electrical or Mechanical Technology, Design Project, Comms, Electrical or Mechanical Principles, Electrical Machines, Manufacturing, Quality, Materials, Electronics, Work-Based Project.

Entry Requirements

You will have successfully completed a Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship or Diploma or be working in the engineering industry and want to enhance your qualifications. There will be an interview with a member of the course team to ensure this is the appropriate course for your needs.

How is it taught?

The method of teaching will depend primarily on the type of unit that is studied. However, all units will generally encompass a variety of teaching methods and style, with the emphasis on a shift from teaching to learning.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on the completion of each module, at each stage of the course and at the end of the course. Grades are awarded at all assessment points, which ensures a continual checking of your progress at specific points in the course.

What else do I need to know?

Stoke on Trent College has some of the most comprehensive and up-to-date facilities in the country. Learning takes place in a friendly and relaxed environment and your teaching team are here to help you get the most from your course. If you want to study on your own you can use one of the Learning Resource Centres or one of the special study workshops in English, Mathematics and Information Technology.
All our classrooms are large, spacious and well equipped, and our staff have an excellent knowledge of the industry gained through many years of experience.
Visits may be arranged to engineering exhibitions and companies to supplement your programme of study.

What could I do next?

Progression can include HND Engineering or the Foundation degree in Technology and successful students will be entitled to add ëFdSCí after their names. The programme provides a platform to continuing Higher Education to complete a BSc (Hons) in Technology or a related discipline. It will also provide entry to certain professional bodies. The option routes in Mechanical, Manufacture and Electrical/ Electronic Engineering have been developed in conjunction with employers and other interested engineering organisations including professional bodies.
