City & Guilds Medical Administration Diploma Level 2

What is this course about?

The course has been designed to enable candidates to progress directly into employment within the health care support field or to progress to further study. The content is based on the main role and responsibilities of a medical administrator/receptionist. Each unit details the knowledge, understanding and skills required to carry out this vital support role in any section of the health services.

City & Guilds has developed the Medical Administrative L2 qualifications in collaboration with AMSPAR (the Association of Medical Secretaries, Practice Managers, Administrators and Receptionists). They offer a flexible and updated suite of qualifications that provide candidates with the understanding, knowledge and skills that will meet the special administration support needs of a range of health care providers such as general practices, dental practices, hospitals, pharmacists, opticians, NHS Trusts and health authorities.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must be at least 16 years of age at entry.

How is it taught?

Learning takes place in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Your lecturers are there to help you gain confidence and the most you can from your course. A virtual learning system, Moodle, which can be accessed from home, work or college is used to support your learning.

How will I be assessed?

The course is a mixture of an internally marked assignments and externally marked exams.

The subjects taught are:
Medical Terminology (L2 award in Medical Terminology) ñ This class takes a structural approach, focussing on how medical terms are built from a combination of roots, prefixes and suffixes and the recognition of these terms from given definitions. The aim of this unit is to provide students, who have no previous knowledge of the subject, with a thorough grounding in the correct construction, recognition and usage of medical terminology.
Medical Principles for the Administrator ñ the learning outcomes comprise of health promotion/preventative medicine, principles of infection, role and function of diagnostic departments, medical ethics/medical etiquette, drugs used in medicine, basic anatomy and physiology.
Communication Skills in a Medical Environment ñ the aim of this unit is to equip the student with the knowledge and skills to be able to communicate appropriately with a range of people in a medical environment.
Administration skills in a Medical Environment ñ The aim of this unit is to enable the student to understand medical administrative procedures, including registration of patients, appointments and appointment systems, the use of office equipment, how to deal with post, filing and repeat prescribing. In addition, they will gain an understanding of how to manage their own workload and the importance of accuracy in the medical environment.
Plus an optional unit e.g. Information Technology (Word, Excel, Access).
