Entry Requirements

NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in an appropriate subject. You will have a preinduction interview/assessment to make sure this is the right level for you.

How is it taught?

A variety of teaching methods will be used through your training, including practical skills demonstrations, classroom teaching, workshops, role play, discussion and work packs. Some independent study is required for which guidance is given. Practical skills and assessments are carried out on commercial clients within the new purpose built industry standard salon facilities.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will involve the collection of portfolio evidence, which could include practical observations, questioning, online tests, projects, assignments and case studies. You will be meeting and working with members of the public, including through work experience, and will need to provide a number of paying clients for practical assessment purposes.

What else do I need to know?

This is a vocational course giving you the training and skills needed for employment, so good punctuality and attendance is essential. To comply with industry and awarding body standards for commercial salons, you will be required to purchase a salon uniform and equipment which is available by mail order. The recommended salon uniform needs to be worn at all times during practical and commercial salon sessions. A professional appearance is necessary with a good standard of personal hygiene and you will need to be willing to receive and carry out the treatments for which you are training. Some courses have trips or visits which may have a cost attached. You will also have the opportunity to be entered in national skills competitions representing the college.

Optional units may change depending on employer requirements.

When carrying out independent study you will be able to use the College Learning Resource Centres, where you can access computers, text books DVD’s and other learning materials.

You will also carry on developing your Functional Skills such as maths, English and ICT as these continue to be an important element of study.

What could I do next?

Successful completion could lead to employment in a Health Spa. Progression onto Complementary Therapy or Higher Education is also possible.
