NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing Level 2

What is this course about?

This course progresses from either the Level 1 Certificate Salon Services or NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing. You will build on your knowledge of the many different aspects of hairdressing, through a combination of practical skills, theoretical knowledge and working in a commercial environment.

Unit Titles:-

Mandatory

Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health & safety

Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation

Advise and consult with clients

Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp

Change hair colour

Style and finish hair

Set and dress hair

Cut hair using basic techniques

Optional

Fulfil salon reception duties

Promote additional services or products to clients

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grade D or above. BTEC Introductory Certificate or Diploma, appropriate NVQ Level 1, or another relevant Level 1 or Foundation qualification. You will have a pre-induction interview/assessment to make sure this is the right level for you.
You must be 18+ for complementary Therapy.

How is it taught?

After initial experience, skills will be developed on a wide range of commercial clients. You will learn and practice the practical skills in the College's up to date hair salons. Theoretical work will be closely linked with demonstrations and practical work.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by practical assessment and portfolio.

What else do I need to know?

This course covers nine units comprising both mandatory and optional units. Mandatory units are:

Health & Safety
Giving a positive impression
Shampoo and Conditioning
Cutting Hair
Style and Dress hair
Change hair colour

The optional units include:

Perm
Reception
Promotion
Effectiveness at work

You will also carry on developing your Key Skills. Additional help with number, written work and using Information Technology is available individually or in small groups.

You will have an opportunity to enter hairdressing competitions.

To comply with industry and awarding body standards for commercial salons the following criteria has to be met (in addition to the College Disciplinary Procedure):

The recommended salon uniform has to be worn at all times.
All jewellery must be removed, including any facial or body piercing.

Natural nails to be short, well manicured and polish free.

A good standard of personal hygiene and well groomed appearance.

You will need to work effectively with others and be willing to carry out and receive all treatments.

You will be meeting and working with members of the public and will need to provide a number of paying clients for practical assessments.

You will normally have to pay for course items such as stationery, books and equipment, whilst some courses have placements or visits, such as the Blackpool Championships, which may have costs attached. You will also be required to purchase a salon uniform and equipment – these are available by mail order, an order form will be provided.



National Vocational Qualifications are work related qualifications that are based on your ability to do a particular job at a certain standard. They provide clear evidence of skills and experience to potential employers. In order to achieve an NVQ you have to demonstrate your practical skills and knowledge to an assessor.

What could I do next?

Upon completion of NVQ Level 2 you may progress onto NVQ Level 3 or an Advanced Apprenticeship.
