First Aid at Work - Refresher

What is this course about?

To re-qualify and update existing First Aiders to HSE standards so that they can continue to administer First Aid to a casualty in the workplace following an injury or illness using materials to hand and HSE approved first aid equipment. A further 3 year Certificate of Competence (health and safety Approved) will be awarded on successful completion of the course and assessment.

Entry Requirements

Existing First aiders whose First Aid at Work certificate is due for renewal (currently 3 years). This course complies with the health and safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

How is it taught?

The course is delivered within a classroom environment. Learners will complete a review of the principles that were gained during the previous First Aid at Work training. The sessions are interactive, learners do need to be willing to participate.

How will I be assessed?

Learners need to successfully complete the assessment at the end of the course. This is a combination of a practical assessment and oral questioning.

What else do I need to know?

ï Initial Assessment of a casualty
ï Primary Survey
ï Recovery position
ï Mouth-to-Mouth breathing
ï Cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR
ï Causes and managements of unconsciousness (secondary Survey)
ï Revision of bandaging skills and knowledge
ï Fractures, recognition and treatment
ï Recognizing and treating
ï Seizures, Diabetic emergencies, Heart conditions, asthma, Burns, poisoning and eye injuries.

What could I do next?

To maintain the First Aid at work qualification, learners will need to attend and achieve the refresher award again within three years. Learners can attend an annual update to maintain their practise. Learners may also choose to complete a further qualification in Health and Safety.
