Diploma in an Introduction to Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy

What is this course about?

All hair, beauty and holistic therapy courses offer a great education through practical skills and theoretical knowledge. All the tutors are highly qualified and experienced, working to teach the latest styles and techniques.

Courses also involve functional skills and personal and social development, and will provide a valuable insight into the hairdressing and beauty industries and will develop a range of basic skills and knowledge. They also involve different aspects of working in a commercial environment.

This qualification is intended for students who wish to further explore their interest in the hair and beauty sector. It will help you gain an insight about the industry; learn useful basic skills and relevancy background knowledge.

Working with others in the hair and beauty sector

The art of dressing hair

The art of colouring hair

Plaiting and twisting hair

Basic make-up application

Entry Requirements

2 GCSEs grade E-G, Entry Level 3, or another relevant Entry Level qualification. You will have a pre-induction interview/assessment to make sure this is the right level for you.

How is it taught?

A variety of teaching methods will be used through your training, including practical skills demonstrations, classroom teaching, workshops, role play, discussion and work packs. Some independent study is required for which guidance is given. Practical skills and assessments are carried out on commercial clients within the new purpose built industry standard salon facilities.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will involve the collection of portfolio evidence, which could include practical observations, questioning, online tests, projects, assignments and case studies. You will be meeting and working with members of the public, including through work experience, and will need to provide a number of paying clients for practical assessment purposes.

What else do I need to know?

This is a vocational course giving you the training and skills needed for employment, good punctuality and attendance is essential. To comply with industry and awarding body standards for commercial salons, you will be required to purchase a salon uniform and equipment which is available by mail order, an order form will be provided. The recommended salon uniform needs to be worn at all times during practical and commercial salon sessions. A professional appearance is necessary with a good standard of personal hygiene and you will need to be willing to receive and carry out the treatments for which you are training. Some courses have trips or visits which may have a cost attached. You will also have the opportunity to be entered in national skills competitions representing the college.

Optional units may change depending on employer requirements.

When carrying out independent study you will be able to use the College Learning Resource Centres, where you can access computers, text books DVD’s and other learning materials.

You will also carry on developing your Functional Skills such as Maths, English and ICT as these continue to be an important element of study.

What could I do next?

This is an introductory course and it should be understood that successful completion of the qualification does not imply a level of occupational competence.

Those wishing to enter a career in hairdressing or beauty therapy will need to progress onto vocational training to gain an appropriate qualification.
