Higher Education Unit - Introduction to Java Programming

What is this course about?

This course is an introduction to programming using the Java language.
Contents include: Variables, Keyboard Input, String Methods, Selection/Decision Statements, Loops, Arrays, Algorithmics Sorting and Searching, Exceptions Handling and Files. The main focus of the module is to teach fundamental programming techniques, which are applicable regardless of language. As a result of this the object-orientated features of Java are not considered here but are reserved for the follow-on module.


Entry Requirements

This module (whilst offered separately here) is part of the Foundation degree in Computing and HNC in Applied IT - and as such is at Level 4 (university undergraduate level). Youíll will be expected to have good English and Maths. Ideally you will also have an appropriate certificate at Level 3 (A Level equivalent). Dependent upon your existing ability and qualifications an interview for admission onto this course may be required.

How is it taught?

This is a part-time evening course delivered via lectures, workshops and practical demonstration. You are encouraged to ask questions and to work in small groups on some of your tutorialsas this helps provide a range of learning opportunities. Tutor support is also provided outside of the teaching time via an online learning environment.
Youíll also be expected to spend between 3 to 6 hours of your own time completing the coursework each week.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment consists of three in-class tests based on a portfolio of tutorial exercises produced partly in the classroom and partly in your own time.

Stoke on Trent College has some of the most comprehensive and up-to-date facilities in the country. Learning takes place in a friendly and relaxed environment and your teaching team are here to help you get the most from your course. If you want to study on your own you can use one of the Learning Resource Centres or one of the special study workshops in English, Mathematics and Information Technology.
All our classrooms are large, spacious and well equipped, and our staff have an excellent knowledge of the industry gained through many years of experience.

What could I do next?

You may choose to complete the follow-up module: Object Orientated Programming Techniques, which builds on this unit and discusses both general Object Orientated techniques as well as building graphical user interfaces in Java. If youíve completed this module you may choose other modules from the variety of those on offer as part of the Foundation degree in Computing and HNC in Applied IT.
