BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (Interactive Media)

What is this course about?

Subjects: Interface Design, Animation, Graphic Design, Web Design, Character Development, Flash, Video for Interactive Products, Illustration, Contextual Studies.

This course aims to equip you with the design and the production skills required for work in industry or progress to university. While on the course we will develop your understanding of the design process applied to a range of production disciplines including interactive screen graphics, games design artwork and web design. The course enables you to explore the creative possibilities of new media and produce a range of creative products. Students have the opportunity to undertake commercial or freelance work as well as specialise in a subject area of their choosing for their final major project. The Media and Performing Arts department is equipped with a variety of specialist facilities and equipment including a TV and photography studio, as well as Apple Mac Graphics and Multimedia workshops. The Learning Resources Centres are designed to help students by offering information technology facilities, workshops and libraries

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grade A*-C, BTEC First Diploma, appropriate NVQ Level 2 or Intermediate qualification. You will have a pre induction interview/assessment to make sure this is the right level for you.

How is it taught?

The course is taught by a team of specialist lecturers including working professionals, who aim to help you to gain the most from the course. You are also allocated a personal tutor who will guide you through the course as well as organising any support that you may need.

The course is delivered through a mixture of practical workshops, lectures and self directed study. While on this course you will be continually assessed through project work, this will enable you to improve your grades during the course.


How will I be assessed?

This course is assessed by continual assessment, rather than exams, and students will need to research, plan and produce practical work. All assignments have interim assessment points, when the lecturer assesses the work and shows the student how to improve their grades. Students requiring any support in producing written work, organising themselves or managing their time can access our academic mentors.

What else do I need to know?

This course is designed to enable you to develop a high level of skills in all aspects of design, illustration, interactivity, time-based media and digital imaging. In order for you to make an informed decision concerning your future education and career choices, advice is readily available. You will also have the opportunity to improve your skills in English, Maths and I.T through Functional Skills in order to improve your employability and progression opportunities.

What could I do next?

With an Extended Diploma in Interactive Media you can progress into employment or on to a range of university courses including animation, graphic design, interface design, games and multimedia design courses. All students receive careers advice from their tutor and student services.
