Higher Education Unit - Object Orientated Programming with Java

What is this course about?

An introduction to Object Orientated programming using the Java language.This module assumes that students already have a knowledge of the fundamentals of programming (variables, decision statements, loops, arrays, etc).

Contents include: classes, attributes, methods and implementing class relationships such as inheritance. You will also learn develop event driven Graphical User Interfaces.


Entry Requirements

This module (whilst offered separately here) is part of the Foundation degree in Computing and HNC in Applied IT - and as such is at Level 4 (university undergraduate level). Youíll will be expected to have good English and Maths. Ideally you will also have an appropriate certificate at Level 3 (A Level equivalent). Dependent upon your existing ability and qualifications an interview for admission onto this course may be required.

How is it taught?

This is a part-time evening course delivered via lectures, workshops and practical demonstration. You are encouraged to ask questions and to work in small groups on some of your tutorialsas this helps provide a range of learning opportunities. Tutor support is also provided outside of the teaching time via an online learning environment. Youíll also be expected to spend between 3 to 6 hours of your own time completing the coursework each week.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment consists of two in-class tests based on a portfolio of tutorial exercises produced partly in the classroom and partly in your own time.

What else do I need to know?

Due to the level of this course all students will need to speak to a member of the HE Computing team before being accepted on to the course.
