A Diverse Celebration of Culture at Stoke on Trent College
Stoke on Trent College have been celebrating Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Week with a vibrant array of activities taking place across both campuses from 15th to 19th April.
Now in its twelfth year, this annual event serves as a platform for organisations to spotlight their work to create a fairer and more inclusive college environment for both learners and staff. It provides an opportunity to promote, showcase and celebrate the amazing work going on across the college around the areas of equality, diversity and inclusion.
Throughout the week, learners and staff have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities, from themed lunches to exhilarating wheelchair basketball matches. One particular highlight of the week is the launch of the College’s flagship Enrichment programme – Challenge South Africa, which sees learners take part in a wide range of social and personal development activities and community-based, fundraising events before setting off on a 10-day trip of a lifetime to Cape Town, South Africa.
A centerpiece of the week was the Multi-cultural Day, held on Thursday 18th April at the Cauldon Campus. Learners were encouraged to join in the celebrations and meet with a range of external representatives including Amity Hub, Stoke City FC and Staffordshire Police, tantalise their taste buds with international cuisine and hear traditional music from around the world, including a captivating live performance of Ukrainian music.
At 12.30pm, a dazzling ‘catwalk’ show took place which offered learners the chance to demonstrate and celebrate a range of traditional dress from a range of cultures.
Dave Hopley, Assistant Principal of Student Services at Stoke on Trent College said: “This week is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase and celebrate the range of equality and diversity at Stoke on Trent College.”
Emma Brannen, Vice Principal Quality and Curriculum at the College echoed this statement. She added: “At Stoke on Trent College we have learners from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. Being able to come together to celebrate and recognise the huge range of diversity at the college is a simply wonderful experience. We are proud to honour and embrace the multitude of backgrounds and cultures represented at the College and the uniqueness this brings”
