University Level Courses
What's in it for you?

It is acknowledged that people with higher level qualifications earn more money and are twice as likely to be employed in senior roles. Higher level courses give you important transferrable skills and give you an edge in the employment market.

At Stoke on Trent College we have many years experience in running higher level courses that deliver excellent results. Studying here, you will meet new people, encounter new ideas and learn more about your chosen subject.

Courses are vocational and related to your job. Qualifications are delivered by tutors who have real-world experience and knowledge of the subjects they teach. We keep class sizes small, with an informal atmosphere and provide substantial individual support.

We are part of SURF (Staffordshire University Regional Federation) and the University Quarter. Our higher level courses are awarded by Staffordshire University and you will have full access to resources at both the college and university.

Financial Support

We recognise that in many cases, getting the right financial support can be a key factor in deciding whether to study a course or not. We are able to offer support to all higher education students, depending on your personal circumstances and the type of course you are studying.

For full-time students, the main types of financial help you may be able to get are:

  * A Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant
  * A Tuition Fee Loan to cover your fees in full
  * A Maintenance Loan - if you live away from home

For part-time students, you could get financial help through the Fee Grant, Course Grant and other sources, provided that the course:

  * Lasts at least one year
  * Leads to a Higher Education qualification
  * Does not take more than twice as long to complete as the equivalent full-time course

For further information about the financial support available please get in touch.

Qualifications/ subjects

Foundation degrees are designed in partnership with employers. They equip you with skills and knowledge relevant to your employment. Integrating academic and work-based learning, they allow you to learn alongside your existing job. However, you may also undertake a Foundation degree when returning to work or changing your career.

Foundation degrees are usually equivalent to the first two years of an Honours Degree. Most are offered on a part-time basis and are usually completed within three years, although some Foundation degree courses can be completed within two years. Full-time Foundation degrees are mostly completed within two years. All Foundation degrees offer a guaranteed progression route to at least one named Honours Degree, most of which are at Staffordshire University.

A FLAP award is a “bite size” degree level award made up of one or more Staffordshire University modules in a specialised field and can be completed in a much shorter time than a full degree programme. Why not ask if there’s one that suits your specialist needs?

We also offer a number of Higher National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/D) and Foundation Year courses.

All foundation degrees are subject to amendment as they are validated through Staffordshire University.

Chris Shufflebotham and Joanna Bailey

Chris Shufflebotham, 37, from Newcastle, was a pupil at Clayton High School where he excelled in Business. He studied for his BTech in Engineering at Newcastle College as a YTS in Electronics in a full time job until 2009 and volunteered to do IT support at the company that he worked for. He started his Stoke on Trent College Foundation Degree in April 2008 but was unable to complete this as he was made redundant and the course was work-based. However, because he had completed two years of the Foundation degree he was awarded a HNC in applied IT at Stoke on Trent College which was accredited by Staffordshire University and was accepted as a direct entry student to do a BSC in applied IT at Staffs University which he is due to finish to finish 2011.

Chris loves all snow sports and he has an ambition to "improve my cooking – learn to stop burning things!" an ambition which is thoroughly endorsed by his fiancée Joanna. Chris said: "I would like to thank my lecturer at Stoke on Trent College, Geoff Leese for all the help and encouragement that he gave to me."

Joanna Bailey, 28, from Newcastle-under-Lyme attended Birches Head High School and proved to be a good all round student gaining 9 GCSE's at the A-C grades. After leaving school she took a job as a Modern Apprentice with Newcastle Borough Council - gaining an NVQ in Business Administration at level 2 and 3 over the next 5 years.

She decided that she needed more challenges and took on an Introduction to Computer Programming course at Stoke on Trent college in 2003, Technical Computing (Pascal) following this, and the next year with a Visual Basic course. With her new skills and increased confidence she was offered a new job with Newcastle Borough Council providing IT Application and Support to other members of staff.
Joanna saw an advert for the new Foundation degree which was provided by Stoke on Trent College but was accredited by Staffs University. Newcastle Borough Council provided funding for evening attendance over the 3 years. Joanna worked hard and was awarded a merit (FDSc Computing) and is currently converting that to a BSc (Hons) Applied IT at Staffordshire University. She plans to go on to do an MSc in Computing and possibly do a PhD, researching into computing.

With her full time job providing application support at the Borough Council as well as her studies Joanna still finds time for hobbies which include Fencing at Fenton Manor and plans to take up skiing and snowboarding in the winter. She is engaged Chris who she met at Stoke on Trent College whilst studying on the Pascal course.
