Talented students take the national stage  

Students from Stoke on Trent College will hit the national spotlight at an event to promote up and coming musical talent.

Talented singer Rosie Radford and indie rock band Carnation will take centre stage at the UK Music Students Awards and Atom Live finals.

Rosie, from Chesterton, will go on stage at the Liverpool Arena to accept the Stoke on Trent College music student of the year awards at a ceremony hosted by popular DJ Edith Bowman and featuring a performance by rap star Professor Green.

Stoke on Trent College is among a group of college’s whose Performing Arts Centres are recognised as centres of excellence by Access to Music.

Lecturers at each college nominate a student of the year who is presented with the accolade on stage at the national UK Music Student Awards finals at the Echo Arena, Liverpool on Thursday, May 17. Stoke on Trent College’s Lee Beddow will join Edith Beddow on stage to present the prize to Rosie.

Three piece band Carnation will also be in Liverpool to compete in the Atom Live (Access to Music) finals on Friday, May 18.

They will be one of 12 bands competing for six places on a UK tour and the ultimate prize, for just one band, of a gig at the prestigious South by South West Festival in Texas next March.

Carnation, made up of Jack Lancaster (vocals and guitar), Tom Castrey (drums) and Paul Chaplin (bass) already play regular gigs in North Staffordshire and beyond.

Music Lecturer Lee Beddow said: “Rosie is an outstanding vocalist and a hardworking student. She has demonstrated her commitment to music and her fellow students by always being there when a vocalist is needed for a gig – at one point this year, Rosie was singing with three different bands.

“Carnation are already making their mark on the music scene and are one of just two bands chosen to represent the Midlands at the Atom Live finals.”

Stoke on Trent College’s Performing Arts Centre at the Moorland Road, Burslem campus, has professional standard recording studios and the college is affiliated to the National Skills Academy for the arts and Access to Music.
