Students tune in for careers in radio
Students can now train in radio production and gain hands-on skills thanks to a unique partnership between Stoke-on-Trent College and Signal Radio.
Starting this September Stoke on Trent College will offer a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Creative Media Production (Radio), which will cover everything from script writing and presentation skills to producing radio shows including drama, news reporting, music, commercial projects and internet content.
And as students in the Signal Radio Media Academy, their course is actually based both at Signal’s studios in Stoke Road, Shelton, and at the Burslem campus of Stoke-on-Trent College.
Iain Fowler, Station Director at Signal, said: “This is a great partnership between the private sector and education."
“The students will be based at the college, but will also spend time at Signal Radio. It is a hands-on practical course which fits in with Stoke on Trent College’s determination to provide people in North Staffordshire with a real education.”
Charles Bartholomew, Assistant Director of Media and Performing Arts at Stoke on Trent College, said: “We are delighted to be working alongside Signal to offer this highly practical new course in radio production.
“Through a mix of commercial projects, practical workshops in the Signal studio and lectures, students will gain the real work place skills they need to succeed in a career in Radio.”
The course provides a valuable stepping stone towards a future career such as a Script Writer, Show Producer, Commercial Producer, Broadcast Journalist, Show Presenter or Technical Operator.
