Additional learning support

Stoke on Trent college is committed to supporting disabled learners and those with learning difficulties or additional learning support needs. Our Central Learning Support team are always happy to discuss personal requirements to make sure everyone can get the most out of their time at college.

Learners may need support for many reasons, such as having specific learning difficulties like dyslexia, sensory or mobility needs or speaking English as a second or other language. For the majority of learners, additional support can be provided by their tutor/lecturer. This may take the form of adapting teaching materials and assessments and making sure that activities meet the needs of individual learners.

Additional support may also include specialist assessment and extra time to complete work, support in exams, specialist equipment including laptops, Learning Support Assistants and Support Workers for learners with sensory and physical disabilities.

Andrew Dawson

Andrew is currently volunteering at the college with the aim of becoming a specialist in Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. Andrew is deaf, and the college provides him with support in the form of lipspeakers and signers in order to help him get the qualifications that employers look for.

He says:

“The teachers have been very understanding, and the support workers have been a big help.

“I would recommend that deaf students come to Stoke on Trent college – they will get plenty of support such as signing and note taking.”
