If you have no previous qualifications, the Access to Higher Education courses will provide you with an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to progress to university. Equivalent to A Levels, the Health or Science Diplomas offer a great basis for further study in areas such as nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, teaching or social work. You will study a range of topics that are relevant to your Degree or chosen career.

Students studying on the Access to Science programme will be taught in the purpose built, Staffordshire University Science Centre.  Situated at the heart of the University Quarter it hosts a number of specialist laboratories and a cognitive and development psychology suite.  University taster days and events are arranged throughout the course to provide seamless progression to Degree programmes.  What’s more, our award winning virtual learning environment is available for all students and provides a wealth of resources to support your studies.

UCAS applications are supported by the college Careers Team. A recent report stated that ‘students felt the support afforded them whilst completing their UCAS forms had been fantastic and most already had offers from their first choice University’.

Jemma Richards

Jemma studied an access course at Stoke on Trent College so that she could go on to study at university. She has since graduated from Keele University with a 2:1 honours degree in psychology.

She found her time at college a key experience in preparing her for higher education, giving her the confidence and ability to study a subject in more detail. Jemma says:

“I have fond memories of my time spent at college. Although I was apprehensive about returning to education as a mature student the support which I received from both staff and other students made the whole experience less daunting. I also forged close friendships with other students which still remain today.”

Jemma felt that the challenge of the work and sense of achievement were some of the most memorable parts of her time at college. She ends by saying:

“Do it! It was one of the best things I have ever done and I am very proud of what I have achieved as a result of beginning my journey at Stoke on Trent College.”
