Katie Purcell – Prince’s Trust Team

Katie had given up, and had little idea what her next steps should be.  Having dropped out of her level three Health and Social Care course in order to care for her mother until she sadly passed away, Katie spent the next six months suffering with depression, which in turn severely dented her confidence and motivation.  Attending an interview with Prince’s Trust Team Leader, Tom Perry, it was here where Katie finally found the support and direction she desperately needed. Katie explains, “After mum passed away, I didn’t know what to do with my life. I wanted to do something, but I had no idea what that would be. I applied for a course in childcare, but my poor mental health meant that I didn’t have the motivation to even face the interview. I met Tom when supporting a friend who was interested in starting the Prince’s Trust Team Programme, and I was immediately interested as it sounded like it was something completely different, something which could help me get back on my feet. The first week was very daunting, the idea of meeting new people, but ended up being really fun. We did a community project at the Hub in Blurton, and I had responsibility for planning and running all our fundraising activities. This was building my confidence, I was getting out of the house, I was meeting new people, making speeches, doing things I had never done before. Tom and I discussed doing two work placements, one in a nursery, and another in a secondary school in order to develop a better idea of what I would like to do for a career. While both of these placements were amazing, it was at Eastwood Day Nursery in Hanley where I found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. At the end of the course, I went back to my work placement with my CV, where I was interviewed for a level 3 apprenticeship as a Childcare Practitioner. I have gone from having no confidence, no motivation and no direction, to a full time apprenticeship in a career that I love. The Prince’s Trust can really help you to focus on what you want, offering so much support along the way. It is one of the best things you will ever do.”... Read more
