The Sector

Sport and fitness have an estimated contribution to the UK economy of £21 billion every year. This important and robust sector is the 15th largest in the country and spans sport and leisure centres such as gyms, spas and sports clubs, sports coaching and training facilities as well as stadiums and arenas. There are more than 6,000 fitness facilities in the UK and over 13% of the population are registered as members of a private health or fitness club.

 

The Careers

Sport employment is crucial to the economy and the number of people with sport-related jobs is estimated to rise to over 415,000 next year. That’s 3% of the overall working population. Job opportunities include gym floor assistant, fitness class instructor, personal trainer, sports coach or youth worker. From sports marketing and media to dieticians and therapists, sports journalism or sports event management, the industry is flourishing with opportunities.

Institute of Sports Performance

The Institute of Sports Performance is available to every student in the college, not just sports students, and is based within the fantastic sports facilities at the college.

The new Institute is a core part of the college’s new commitment to being one of the top sports institutions within the region, and will be working very closely with partners such as Staffordshire Universities TEAM:STAFFS Elite programme, and the European City of Sport Team, alongside key commercial partners My Protein and Under Armour.

The Institute of Sports Performance has been established to ensure that all students have the opportunity to be a success in their sport, whether it is competing, volunteering, coaching or just trying to keep fit and active.

There will be a wide variety of programmes offered which are aimed at the following areas:

  • Supporting elite college athletes
  • Sports Academies and competitive inter-college sport
  • A coach and short course education programme
  • Intra-mural sport and physical activity within the college.

New opportunities will be continually developed and many are run in conjunction with local and national partners.

Advanced Apprenticeship Exercise & Fitness

Sports Science & Coaching

This work based Apprenticeship is ideal if you are working in, or want to work in the Fitness industry at Level 3. You will gain technical knowledge and real practical experience to start your career. You will learn in the workplace and have formal training in our modern training room. You will have the opportunity to practice and embed new skills in a real work context. You will take a NVQ Diploma in Instructing Personal Training and a Certificate in Personal Training both at L3. If you do not have maths or English qualifications at the necessary level, then you will need to achieve these at Level 2 to be successful in your Apprenticeship. You will be able to prepare and deliver training programmes for adults on an individual basis, be able to cater for a variety of needs ranging from older adults to athletes and people wishing to train for a specific sporting activity. The BTEC Level 2 is a demanding theory based course which includes some practical elements. The course provides you with the necessary skills and knowledge to work or study at higher levels in the sports industry, and looks at the aspects of coaching and support required for sports performance. This involves subjects related to nutrition, sports psychology, health and anatomy and physiology. In addition the course investigates aspects of health issues and fitness instruction.

Personal Training Level 3 Certificate (CYQ)

The aim of this qualification is to recognise the skills, knowledge and competence required for an individual to work unsupervised as a personal trainer. This course is designed to follow on from the Level 2 course in Fitness Instructing, and takes the principles and knowledge covered on that course to a more advanced level. The course will allow you to apply your knowledge in a more diverse and specific way to meet the needs of individuals more specifically. Aspects such as Nutrition and sports performance are added to the knowledge base of the learners.
