Course Summary

The course focuses on the skills required to become a barber. The course is a full time course and will give the opportunity to be part of the college community and access a wide range of extra enrichment activities. The course also will support you in maths and English qualifications. You will be taught all the practical skills you need to be a junior stylist in a Barber shop. You will also be taught the theory that underpins the practical skills, so that you will not only know how to Style, cut and colour the hair but you will understand what is happening inside the hair so that you can ensure all your clients have healthy hair. You will train and complete all assessments in the commercial salons on paying clients in our realistic working environment.

Course Requirements

Entry Requirements

Grade 1 or 2 English and Maths. This is an introductory course, so no prior skills or experience necessary. Any Foundation qualification will be considered. You will have a pre induction interview/assessment to make sure this course is the right level for you.

How Is It Assessed

The assessment process involves the collection of paper based portfolio evidence which may take the form of practical observations, questioning, online tests, projects, assignments and case studies. You will have opportunity to provide a number of paying clients for practical assessment purposes, you will participate in experience of work.

How Is It Taught

A variety of teaching methods will be used through your training, including practical skills demonstrations, classroom teaching, workshops, role play, discussion and work packs. Some independent study is required for which guidance is given. Practical skills and assessments are carried out on commercial clients within the new purpose built barbershop facilities and chairs.

What Could I do Next

On successful completion of Level 1 you will be qualified to progress onto Level 2 barbering or hairdressing or undertake an apprenticeship with a Barbershop.

What Else Do I Need To Know

This is a vocational course giving you the training and skills needed for employment, good punctuality and attendance is essential. To comply with industry and awarding body standards for commercial barbershops, you will be required to purchase a barber uniform and equipment which is available by mail order, an order form will be provided. The recommended barber uniform needs to be worn at all times during practical and commercial salon sessions. A professional appearance is necessary with a good standard of personal hygiene and you will need to be willing to receive and carry out the treatments for which you are training. Some courses have trips or visits which may have a cost attached. You will also have the opportunity to be entered in national skills competitions representing the College in which there have been many successful outcomes for the College. Optional units may change depending on employer requirements. When carrying out independent study and e-learning you will be able to use the College Learning Resource Centres, where you can access computers, text books, DVD’s and other learning materials. You will also continue to develop your skills in maths and English as these continue to be an important element of your study.
