You should hold an advanced level qualification (minimum level 3) in the subject area you wish to teach. You will also need to hold a level 2 or equivalent qualification in English/literacy.
How Is It Assessed
The qualification will be assessed by a combination of assignments, a portfolio of teaching evidence and observation of teaching or training. Simulation of teaching (micro-teaching) is not permitted for this qualification.
How Is It Taught
The course includes theory and practical sessions that will enable you to increase your knowledge and develop and practise your skills. You will be required to complete some self-study and in particular reading educational text books and journals.
What Could I do Next
After successful completion learners could apply for QTLA Status (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status).
What Else Do I Need To Know
You will need to have access to a total of 100 hours of teaching practice during the course. It is also important to have access to a subject specialist mentor, who is normally in the workplace where the teaching practice is undertaken. This will allow you to teach in the post compulsory sector and work for further education colleges, adult and community centres and work-based training providers in an Associate Teacher role.
