Course Summary
The course focuses on the skills required to become a barber, therefore only covers mens haircutting. The course is part time and runs over a full day and evening in order to support you with also working in a Barbers alongside the course should you wish. Course assignments and assessments can include:Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health & safety
Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
Advise and consult with clients
Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
Change hair colour
Style and finish hair, including perming
Set and dress hair
Cut hair using basic techniques and clippers
Face shaving and beard trimming
Fulfil salon maintenance duties
Apply and promote additional services or hair products to clients
The barbershop has industry standard barber chairs and clippers, equipment and a range of hair styling products.

Entry Requirements
No formal entry requirements, although a skills test will be required at the start of the course to assess your starting point and to enable the lecturer to best meet your needs.How Is It Assessed
You will be assessed through practical assessments and online tests. The assessment process involves the collection of e-portfolio or paper based portfolio evidence which may take the form of practical observations, questioning, online tests, projects, assignments and case studies. You will have opportunity to meet and work with members of the public and will need to provide a number of paying clients for practical assessment purposes, you will participate in experience of work.How Is It Taught
Taught in one of our salons, over a day and evening once a week. You will be taught using a range of teaching methods will be used through your training, including practical skills demonstrations, classroom teaching, workshops, role play, discussion and work packs. Some independent study is required for which guidance is given. Practical skills and assessments are carried out on commercial clients within the new purpose built industry standard salon and barbershop facilities.What Could I do Next
Upon completion of NVQ Level 2 you may progress onto NVQ Level 3, an Advanced Apprenticeship or employment. Contact the college for more details or apply for the course and we will be in touch.What Else Do I Need To Know
You will need to purchase a kit and a uniform at the start of the course, we will support with this where to get these from. You mab be eligible to be funded to receive kit. This is a vocational course giving you the training and skills needed for employment, good punctuality and attendance is essential. To comply with industry and awarding body standards for commercial salons, you will be required to observe the need for a barbershop uniform and maintenance of equipment. The recommended uniform needs to be worn at all times during practical and commercial salon sessions. A professional appearance is necessary with a good standard of personal hygiene and you will need to be willing to receive and carry out the treatments for which you are training. Some courses have trips or visits which may have a cost attached. You will also have the opportunity to be entered in national skills competitions representing the College in which there have been many successful outcomes for the College. Optional units may change depending on employer requirements. When carrying out independent study and e-learning you will be able to use the College Learning Resource Centres, where you can access computers, text books DVDs and other learning materials.Entry Requirements
