Course Summary
As a heavy vehicle technician Apprentice you will develop skills working on heavy vehicles categorised by the Department of Transport as N2 or N3 and associated trailers. You should be interested in the way vehicles operate and be keen to research, analyse and solve problems; organised, methodical and pay attention to detail; you need to be able to work in a team and to communicate well both orally and in writing; able to demonstrate general analytical and mechanical skills.You should be able to demonstrate a capacity for mechanical reasoning and good spatial awareness. You will be required to achieve English and Maths at GCSE Grade C/4 (or Functional Skills Level 2) or above before the Apprenticeship Standard can be awarded.
On successful completion of the programme, the apprentice will have both knowledge and understanding of:
- How to service, inspect and maintain vehicles and trailers to the expected standards and the importance of safety inspection and maintenance schedules to meet Operator’s (O) licence and legal obligations.
- Operators “O” Licence requirements relating to HVs.
-The fundamentals of HV technologies e.g. HV chassis design, engine, fuels, transmissions, electrical (12/24v), air-conditioning, hydraulic and air braking, air suspension systems etc.
- Diagnosing principles and logical problem solving techniques related to HV.
