What is this course about?The Science Foundation Year (SFY) gives you the opportunity to enter degree courses in science if your qualifications do not meet normal Level 1 entry requirements. This is a proven route to achievement with a long track record of success. Importantly, the SFY is tailor-made to prepare you for Level 1 of a degree in the biological sciences or forensic science. It has a modular structure covering the four core components (Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science and Mathematics and Data Handling) ensuring that you have the foundation with subject knowledge and key transferable skills (including communication and IT) required to complete a science degree.
Entry RequirementsApplicants must hold a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or equivalent, have an IELTS score of 6.0 (minimum 5.5) or equivalent and evidence of study or experience at a higher level. We welcome applications from people with a variety of qualifications, skills and experience. We have a flexible approach to our admission of mature applicants and applicants from non-traditional or non-standard academic routes. Applicants are individually assessed and will be made an offer based on their circumstances. Staffordshire University recognises that previous experience gained in work or other areas of life may have prepared mature applicants for a course of study such as this.
How is it taught?The course integrated theory and practice, you will be taught by lecture, laboratory based practical experiments, group work, seminar based work and research. The first year of the course is based at Stoke-on-Trent College ? the subsequent three years are taken at Staffordshire University?s Campus in Stoke-on-Trent. Stoke-on-Trent College’s Science team are based in the new University Science Centre on the University Campus, therefore, you will study in this new, state-of-the-art facility.
How will I be assessed?Assessment is by examinations, coursework and class tests, giving you feedback on your progress whilst allowing you to develop the skills required when tackling a variety of assessment types.

What could I do next?Once you have successfully completed the Foundation Year you can progress to a Degree in Forensic Science, Pharmaceutical Science or Biological Science.
