BTEC L3 Nat Ext Dip in Sport, Fitness & Personal Training
What is this course about?
This course focuses on the application of scientific principles to sports performance and coaching. Individual group and project type experiments are carried out with the latest equipment from our sports science laboratory. Practical sports take place on the college site or in nearby specialist facilities. Visits are included to enhance both theoretical and practical work. Sports nutrition, fitness testing, technological developments in sport and practical sports coaching are among the units delivered. This course is an alternative to AS/A2 levels for those who wish to pursue a career in the field of sport, sport science, sports coaching or professional sports.
How will I be assessed?
Each unit consists of between 2-4 assignments which have to be completed throughout the course. Some units may be fulfilled through open book assessments. Evidence for your portfolio is gathered from written assignments, video evidence of practical ability, investigation work, practical experiments, role play and work experience. For example, in sports nutrition, you will be asked to examine different sports people’s diets, identify strengths and weaknesses and explore how diet may be affecting these sports people’s athletic performance.

Units will include: o Anatomy for Sport and Exercise o Sport and Exercise Psychology o Sport and Exercise Physiology o Research Methods for Sport and Exercise Sciences o Research Project in Sport and Exercise Sciences o Analysis of Sports Performance o Sports Nutrition o Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise o Work Based Experience in Sport o Current Issues in Sport o Outdoor and Adventurous Activities o Exercise, Health and Lifestyle o Sports Injuries You will also be required to take part in two weeks work experience in year 1 which is considered vital to the success of this course and provides practical experience of skills and knowledge learnt in the classroom.
What could I do next?
This course provides an alternative route to the 3 AS/A2 qualification for those who wish to pursue a career in the field of sport, leisure or recreation. You can go on to higher education to study a degree in sports studies/science, leisure studies or PE teaching. Those who wish to pursue careers in sports coaching or professional sport would also find the course highly useful.
