What is this course about?
This course provides an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills for a career in teaching. You will study six units which build to a minimum total of 37 credits on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). The four units are: Understanding roles, responsibilities & relationships in education & training: 3 credits Planning to meet the needs of learners in education & training: 3 credits Delivering education and training: 6 credits Assessing learners in education & training: 6 credits Using resources for education & training: 3 credits Inclusive practice: 15 credits
You should hold an advanced level qualification (minimum level 3) in the subject area you wish to teach. You will also need to demonstrate a good level of English and Maths skills and preferably a level 2 qualification in English/literacy.
How is it taught
The course includes theory and practical sessions that will enable you to increase your knowledge and develop and practise your skills. You will be required to complete some self-study and in particular reading educational text books and journals.
How will I be assessed?
There will be theory and practical assignments. You will also be assessed by observations and you will be required to submit a portfolio.
What else do I need to know?
You will need to have access to a total of 30 hours of teaching practice during the course. It is also important to have access to a subject specialist mentor, who is normally in the workplace where the teaching practice is undertaken. This will allow you to teach in the post compulsory sector and work for further education colleges, adult and community centres and work-based training providers in an Associate Teacher role.
What could I do next?
Successful candidates may progress to the DET (Diploma in Education and Training), PGCE and/or a BA in Education. You could also apply for QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills).
