What is this course about?This course is an introduction to programming using the popular industry standard Microsoft?s C# language. Content includes: Variables, Keyboard Input, String Methods, Selection, Loops, Arrays, Methods, Exceptions Handling, Searching and Sorting Algorithms, Files, Classes, Attributes, Association, Inheritance, Polymorphism, Aggregation, Database Connectivity and GUI design. The main focus of the course is to teach fundamental programming techniques, which are applicable regardless of language.
How is it taught?This is a part-time evening course delivered via lectures, workshops and practical demonstration. You are encouraged to ask questions and to work in small groups on some of your tutorials as this helps provide a range of learning opportunities. Tutor support is also provided outside of the teaching time and support via an online learning environment.
How will I be assessed?Assessment consists of three in-class tests based on a portfolio of tutorial exercises produced partly in the classroom and partly in your own time.
What else do I need to know?Stoke on Trent College has some of the most comprehensive and up-to-date facilities in the country. Learning takes place in a friendly and relaxed environment and your teaching team are here to help you get the most from your course. If you want to study on your own you can use one of the Learning Resource Centres or one of the special study workshops in English, Mathematics and Information Technology. All our classrooms are large, spacious and well equipped, and our staff have an excellent knowledge of the industry gained through many years of experience. Due to the level of this course all students will need to speak to a member of the HE Computing team before being accepted on to the course. The course runs from September to May.
