Aaron loses his locks

STOKE Sixth Form College student Aaron Tabbinor is preparing to say goodbye to his curly hair to raise cash for the trip of a lifetime.

The teenager is placing himself in the hands of hairdressing student Zoe Cooper at Stoke-on-Trent College for a complete head shave, which he hopes will help fund a 10 day visit to Cape Town, South Africa, as part of the Challenge South Africa Project.

The project, which is co-ordinated by Stoke-on-Trent College, has been running since 2005, and this year around 30 students from both Stoke-on-Trent College and Stoke Sixth Form College are expected to make the trip and take part in a range of community activities from visiting local schools and an aids orphanage.

Aaron has already raised £80 and hopes his hair-raising effort will make this amount grow. Aaron also intends to donate his hair to Cancer Research UK to make human hair wigs for cancer patients.

Calvin Austin, Learner Involvement Co-ordinator at Stoke-on-Trent College, said: “The level of dedication and commitment shown so far by our students has been tremendous, they have organised a wide range of activities within in the local community and raised a significant amount of money towards the cost of the visit”

During the last three months all students on the Challenge South Africa Project have been completing a wide range of activities to reach their fundraising total, with activities including climbing Snowdon, car boot sales, endurance challenges, raffles, cake sales and car washes.

Rachel Basnett, Schools Liaison Officer at Stoke Sixth form College, said: “We have seven of our students taking part in the project and it is a fantastic opportunity for them to experience a completely different culture. It gives them a real sense of perspective on their own life and the things we take for granted.”

Aaron will be having his hair shaved at Stoke on Trent College Hairdressing Salon, Lifestyle Building at 5.30pm on Wednesday 19th September, for further details contact Rachel Basnett on 01782 854212 or Calvin Austin on 07786 113853.
