College bands are set to rock the Midlands
Two bands formed by students at Stoke on Trent College are making a big noise in a national talent competition.
Carnation and The Whiskey Dolls are through to the West Midlands regional finals of the Atom Live (Access to Music) competition at Birmingham on Wednesday (21 March).
They are competing for the chance to play at the national final, a UK tour and a gig at the prestigious South by South West Festival in Texas next March.
Music lecturer Lee Beddow said: “It is great to get two bands through to the regional final but we see the talent they have every time they perform or practice in college.”
Three piece indie band Carnation play regularly on the local music circuit and are due to support The Twang at The Box, in Crewe, on Friday (23 March).
The four strong Whiskey Dolls play a more classic rock style of music.
Stoke on Trent College’s Performing Arts Centre at the Moorland Road, Burslem campus, has professional standard recording studios and the college is affiliated to the National Skills Academy for the arts and Access to Music.
Lee said: “We are hopeful that either Carnation or the Whiskey Dolls will get through to the national finals which are part of the Liverpool Sound City festival in May.
“Access to Music are bussing our performing arts student to Liverpool free of charge for the event and they will get access to an after show party which will feature a special performance by well known English rapper Professor Green.
“In September six bands will be taken on a UK tour which will include Stoke-on-Trent along with places such as Manchester, Dundee, York and London.
“And the ultimate prize for one band will be a performance at South by South West in Austin, Texas.”
The band members are:
* Carnation: Jack Lancaster (Vocals and guitar), Tom Castrey (drums) and Paul Chaplin (bass)
* The Whiskey Dolls: Mitch Booth (Vocals), Jack Carter (guitar), Ryan Gillespie ( Drums) and Stu Littlejohn ( Bass)
