Stoke on Trent College is set to host the regional heats of a prestigious competition that attracts top talent from across the UK.
On Wednesday June 11th, hairdressers from across the region will land at the college’s Cauldon Campus for the West Midland heat of the 2014 WorldSkills UK competition. It is the first time the college has hosted the event.
WorldSkills UK inspires young people and adults to be ambitious in their pursuit of skills to the highest level. The competitors will compete to secure a place in the National Final later this year which is designed to test competitors’ skills in a range of critical elements that demonstrate excellence in their chosen trade. Success in most WorldSkills UK Competitions can lead to representing the UK at the WorldSkills International Competition.
Taking place across four and a half hours within the college’s multimillion-pound Lifestyle Building, which is home to the college’s ultra-modern training and commercial salons, the competition will consist of two tasks that relate to women’s hairdressing. The final will consist of three tasks in both women’s and men’s hairdressing. Each task will offer scope for creativity as well as technique and good working practice.
The news comes just days after beauty students from Stoke on Trent College scooped several top spots at the regional heats of the Media Makeup category for the WorldSkills competition. Earlier this year, the students also won regional and national awards at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) competition staged at Blackpool Winter Gardens.
Last year, Stoke on Trent College hair and beauty student Andrea Gordon won Gold at the national WorldSkills UK final with her Alice in Wonderland themed 3D nail art.
Gill Jones, Assistant Director of Hair, Beauty and Holistic Therapy at Stoke on Trent College, said: “This is a real coup for the college’s hairdressing department who have made a successful name for themselves in both education sector and the wider industry.
“We are proud to have incredibly talented students and staff team who work very hard to become the best of the best and continually pick up awards at competitions across the UK. They have helped Stoke on Trent College become recognised as a leading training establishment for hair, beauty and holistic therapies.
“Everyone is very excited to be hosting the regional heat of the WorldSkills UK competition which is organised by L’Oreal Professionnel and an honour in itself to be recognised and chosen by them.
“We would like to wish everyone involved the very best of luck.”
