As digital media begins to dominate businesses Stoke on Trent College is the first to launch a dedicated course in social media.
This unique course is the brainchild of Gareth Edwards, Assistant Director for Business and Computing at the college, who believes social media skills are now essential for students entering the workplace.
He said: “Increasingly companies are now recruiting people who are dedicated purely to managing their social media, particularly in the advertising and event management sectors.
“But there are very few dedicated social media courses out there at the moment, except some one-off courses in the private sector, which actually look at it all in detail.”
Enrolment for the new Diploma in Social Media Marketing For Business has now begun, and the course is aimed at 16-19 year-olds. It can lead to careers in a variety of fields including Digital Marketing Assistant, Digital Marketing Manager, Communications Officer, PR and Advertising.
Gareth added: “Not only will the course cover all the various social media channels, it is also about creating content for social media including images to load onto sites such as Facebook, and videos for use on sites such as YouTube.
“All the students on the course will be expected to set up their own social media presence and to go on and produce various things for each of the different channels.
“As a college we are looking to increase our computing provision even further, so there is also potential to look at offering this as a part time course for adults and those already in work.”
