Stoke on Trent College painting and decorating student, Hayley Grindon, has won the regional heat of Dulux’s Student Decorator of the Year.
Hayley, who is a Level 3 student at the Burslem Campus, will now go on to represent Stoke on Trent College at the final of this year’s Dulux Decorator Centre Student Decorator of the Year competition in July.
This will make it a double success for the keen young painter and decorator, who also competed at last year’s final.
The 2015 final, which will take place at Edinburgh College on 1st – 2nd July, sees East Midlands regional heat winner Hayley compete against ten other finalists from different regional heats across the UK, in the race for the 2015 title.
Hayley successfully completed a practical work piece using skills honed from her painting and decorating course, including wallpapering, stencilling, waterborne glossing and special effects within a set time. The heat saw Hayley pit her skills against 14 other students at the host college, Sandwell.
At the final, Hayley will have to complete another, more challenging practical assessment, to compete for the chance to be named Student Decorator of the Year 2015. Following the final, there will be a presentation evening in Edinburgh, where the winner and runners up will be announced.
Student, Hayley, who is a self-employed painter and decorator comments, “I’m really happy to have won the regional heat. It was challenging to complete the practical piece within the set time but I enjoyed every minute of it. I’m looking forward to the final in Edinburgh – the standard will be even higher and it’s a good opportunity to meet other painting and decorating students from across the UK.”
College lecturer Peter Walters also commented: “It’s a great achievement to come first in the regional heat – we’re all really proud of her at Stoke on Trent College. The level of competition is high, so it’s testament to Hayley’s ability that she will be competing at the final of Student Decorator of the Year.
“We always encourage our students to participate in events like this, because it’s a good opportunity to test their painting and decorating skills, as well as being a very professional and well-recognised competition within the industry.”
Beverley Whitehead, marketing communications manager at Dulux Decorator Centre said: “Now in its eighth year, the competition has seen some of the brightest painting and decorating students test their skills against each other. It’s been great to see such enthusiasm from the students at the regional heats. Hayley’s enthusiasm and skillset is clear – we wish her luck for the final.
“This year’s competition is the biggest yet, and having seen the standard of the regional finalists such as Hayley, we have high hopes for the winner of Student Decorator of the Year!”
3M, Aristospray, Artex, Peelaway Barrettine, Graham & Brown, Mirka, Purdy, Shield and Toupret are all official sponsors of the 2015 competition, with Hamilton a gold sponsor. While regionally, Purdy, Saint-Gobain, Shield and Siroflex are providing sponsorship and product.
For winning the heat, Hayley collected £100 worth of Dulux Decorator Centre vouchers, received a certificate and a goody bag full of decorating materials donated by the company’s suppliers. The final will see the ten regional heat winners and highest runner up competing for the coveted title 2015 Dulux Decorator Centre Student Decorator of the Year, where they will have the chance to win £1,000 cash and a variety of other prizes donated by suppliers, as well as a host of prizes for their college for all painting and decorating students to use.
