Lady Gaga tribute wins prize for college student
A Stoke on Trent College beauty student has taken top honours in a prestigious national competition.
Layla Thornton, 19, of Meir was judged the top student in the country at the Professional Beauty Awards in Manchester where she took second place against recognised industry professionals in both the Bridal and Glamour/Evening make-up sections.
Layla’s tutor Rachel Lea encouraged her star student to enter the high-ranking industry awards. She explained: “This was the first time we have ever entered the awards and Layla had just two weeks notice to prepare mood boards and create totally new looks.
“Even though Layla was competing against around 20 professional make-up artists already working in the industry, her work really stood out from the crowd. Her bridal look was beautiful and worked on the English Rose theme, while her Lady Gaga themed glamour/evening look was just stunning, using silver leaf and really emphasising the eyes.
“Layla has studied with us for three years now and she has a really bright future, her creativity is exceptional and she thoroughly deserves to win these awards.”
Layla, a student on the Level 3 Theatrical and Media make-up course has ambitions to be a freelance professional make-up artist, won two prizes of £50 Art Deco make up vouchers in the competition, held at Manchester Central.
