Students step in to help care home Christmas event
Engineering students at Stoke-on-Trent College have lent a hand to a care home to help raise a smile for their residents.
Tutor Paul Johnson, assistant director of engineering and motor vehicle studies based at the Burslem campus, was approached by The Rock Cottage Care Home in Brown Edge with a slightly unusual request – to build them a brazier fit for roasting festive chestnuts.
Despite never having made one before, the students were quick to take up the task and practice their welding skills, and managed to complete the job in just one day. The brazier will now be used at the care home’s Christmas Market which is being held on Saturday December 1.
“We had a phone call out of the blue from Annette at the care home to say they were having a fundraising event and were looking to see if we could help them by making a chestnut brazier or being able to sponsor one, so we said no problem. We’d never made one before, so we went away and got all the designs for it then our students welded it together. It was a good practical exercise for them which will form part of their coursework, and they got to use their skills for something which will actually be used and will benefit the local community.”
Annette Freeman, joint events co-ordinator at the care home, was delighted with the results when she went to pick up the brazier at the Burslem campus on Thursday.
“We can’t thank the students enough for all their hard work, as we hope the Christmas Market will raise funds to help put a smile on the face of our residents. The money raised at the Christmas Market goes into our comfort fund which we use to help put on shows for them, take them on outings and that sort of thing. Everyone is invited to our market, and anyone wishing to take up a stall is also welcome to contact me.”
