Stroke of success

A painting and decorating student has reached the final of Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year after winning the regional heat.

Apprentice Daniel Holdcroft, 18, who studies Level 2 Painting and Decorating at Stoke on Trent College took part in the North West heats of the competition at Hugh Baird College, Liverpool.

Daniel will now take part in the Johnstones Paints YDY National Final held at the Painting and Decorating show in the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, on December 1st.

Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year is a prestigious painting and decorating competition which celebrates young talent, promotes best practice and encourages young people to pursue a career in the decorating industry.

Launched in 2005, the competition consists of a series of regional heats and a national final and assesses students painting and decorating skills including setting out a design, working to a technical specification, applying different types of Johnstone’s Trade paint, selecting and using application tools, applying stencils.

Tutor Pete Walters said: “We had two students who were selected to compete at the regional stage which is a great achievement in itself.

We are thrilled for Daniel and his success and we will be supporting him ahead of the national final in December.”

Daniel won a £100 cheque and all entrants received brush sets.

Daniel said: “This is my first competition as a winner and it felt great when I heard my name called out.

“I will now have to put in some extra training to try and emulate my success at the National final and other regional competitions.

“I would like to thank the support of my employer Novus and all staff in the Stoke on Trent College Painting and decorating department.”

Fellow student Luke Mulliner, 19, who also competed at the event, said: “It was my first competition and it was a good experience. I came away with a participation certificate and some decorating tools for future use.

“I hope to be able to compete in all future competitions and be more successful next time.”

Stoke on Trent College is home to full and part-time Painting and Decorating students studying levels 1, 2 and 3 within the John Seddon Building at the college’s Burslem Campus, off Moorland Road.
