That’ll “do” nicely!
Hair and beauty students from Stoke on Trent have fought off national competition to win prestigious awards.
The students went head-to-head with learners from colleges from across the UK at the 2014 North West Hair and Beauty Exhibition where they were crowned victorious in three of the four categories they entered.
Stoke on Trent College was awarded second place positions in the nail art and avant-garde make-up categories, as well as taking third spot in the team bridal hair and beauty category.
Staged in the famous Blackpool Winter Gardens on Monday, March 18th, the group were among more than 30 colleges from across the UK showcasing a range of hair and beauty skills.
The avant-garde category, which refers to experimental or innovative designs, saw more than 50 competitors taking part, making it the most fiercely fought competition of the day.
Theatrical make-up student Ami-Jean Lindsay was awarded 2nd place in the avant-garde competition, nail student Krista Rhodes took 2nd in the nail art category, whilst Marlena Luczak and Shanine Dale came 3rd in the Team Bride category.
Shanine, aged 18, who is studying for a diploma in theatrical and media make-up at the college, said: “I was really happy when I found out Marlena and I had won. It was the first industry competition I had entered so it was great to hear all the hard work had paid off.
“The competition is quite nerve-wracking because everyone is watching you and you have to do everything within a set time limit.
“I am glad I entered though because hopefully, having an award on my CV will help when I eventually apply for a place at university.”
Rachel Ogilvie- Lea, beauty lecturer at Stoke on Trent College, said: “We are incredibly proud of the students who took part in the competition and would like to thank them for their hard work.
Being involved in prestigious events like this not only helps them prepare for their future but gives them that edge when entering into the industry.
A competition like this is held in very high regard and to be involved is an honour in itself, so to achieve such high accolades in really overwhelming for us all.
We are delighted with the passion and dedication the learners continue to show and will now be supporting them in further competitions taking place during their time at Stoke on Trent College.”
